The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is described as a program for “those struggling with addiction and recovery.” The Twelve Step program (also listed as Alcoholics Anonymous) was developed as a recovery program in 1933 from a plan for an expanded secular (as an alternative to “religion”) alcoholism treatment program called the “Big Book.” It has since gained popularity as a treatment for addiction, with A.A. members claiming that A.A. is successful in treating addiction to over 90 percent of all forms of alcohol and drug addiction. A.A. is a church with an active chapter in every major U.S. city, often called A.A. meetings. Members and non-members join for a variety of reasons, including spiritual support, drug/alcohol recovery, or recovery from other addictions. Alcoholics Anonymous is a religion in all of its forms (or variations of that name), although many its members are not religious. While A.A. chapters hold meetings, the group does not have a governing body or legal structure that includes the right to collect membership dues. Most A.A. meetings occur at churches, but A.A. often meets in private homes, hotels, or other venues. The program calls for daily attendance in A.A. meetings as a minimum. While A.A. calls for twelve twelve-hour meetings every week in an effort to reach the spiritual level of recovery, it is a good idea to attend weekly for at least a month for the benefit of A.A. The A.A. fellowship is composed of a group of people.

I have heard that argument, and I can definitely see why a tax of just 15% would be a significant burden on the ability of the super-rich to save and build their wealth. At the same time, many Canadian families might be able to afford a tax that was higher than 15%, and that would be an additional savings for them in the future and one they could use in any given year. In our family, I know a number of families whose assets were under 1 million in 2014, but who have already managed to save up for retirement. I would not be surprised if more or less a similar amount of savings is made by their children and grandchildren as well. One of the most common arguments in favor of the estate tax is that it does not apply to Canadian assets. I agree, this is true in theory, but it is not a valid argument in practice. In fact, the laws are very different in the two countries in this area. The reason for the difference is primarily because the US law imposes a higher rate for US heirs than for Canadian heirs (and only for US heirs, the rate is 55 million). However, both the US and Canada have a number of exemptions and loopholes that create a situation where the Canadian exemption can be very low, while the US exemption is high, or even the same high or higher than that in the US. Even so, there can be significant differences in the amount of tax that is due when assets are passed, such as: — The transfer of the property is exempt from US gift tax — If the property was gifted to.
